Strawberries fresh picked from the terraza

I have been picking about 300 g (10 oz) a day from the plants on the terraza. But I missed a day and the haul when I picked was 800 g (28 oz). I have been washing and hulling them before storing them in the freezer.

Probably only a few days left and there will only be a few strays to pick. This type of strawberry has just one big bearing of fruit. I am hoping to find some “ever-bearing” varieties when I visit California late this summer.

Those look delicious!

Of course I have to sample them and they are sweet and flavorful.

Beautiful!

Thanks! I used to grow strawberries when I lived in the Bay Area. They also grow them commercially here in el Maresme, but there is great competition from Huelva in Andalucía and Morocco.

Re: Beautiful!

When my cousins lived in Salinas, they grew strawberries. I remember 1977 (or thereabouts) as being particularly memorable for the quantity and quality of the crop. We had preserves from that year for the next decade.

Most commercially available strawberries these days seem to be bland and boring....

Salinas

Means "salt mine" or source of salt in Spanish. Apparently there is a salt marsh near the town. Very famous for being the "salad bowl" of the US. Just like in California, they use (im)migrant workers to pick strawberries here.

It is a great year for strawberries. When you visit this year we should get together.
