Two months ago the local TV stations switched off their analog signals. Since then there has been a lot of changes. Previously with analog transmission there was just one station associated with each channel. Now several stations are multiplexed on the same channel. So a channel is now referred to as a MUX. This is similar to the US, but the actual transmission method is different (DVB versus ATSC).

Here are some of the new arrivals:

TVE HD
TVE HD
1080i and Dolby Digital+ (in test)
cadena estatal publico
public national network
On the same MUX they are also testing two instances of Teledeporte,
TVE’s sports channel. ("TVE" means "Spanish Television".)
AXN
AXN
cadena estatal privada
private national network
This replaced Sony Entertainment TV and is now “coded” (PPV).
The programming looks similar to the station it replaced.
estil 9
estil 9
cadena local privada
private local network
This is a “lifestyle” type of station from Grupo Godó a media holding company
that also owns La Vanguardia newspaper.
Canal Terrassa
Canal Terrassa
canal publico de ciudad
public city station
I tease Ruben that his “sister” city has a TV station that broadcasts from his city,
but alas Sabadell still does not have its own TV station.
TeleTaxi TV
TeleTaxi TV
cadena local privado
private local network
This is a music video station that also
has scrolling personals sent from viewer’s cell phones.
mola TV
mola TV
cadena local privado
private local network
Another music video channel like Tele Taxi.
There are two instances of mola TV that I receive.
TV Sant Cugat
TV Sant Cugat
estación local publico
public local station
Valles Oriental TV
Valles Oriental TV
estación local publico
public local station
Valles Visió
Valles Visió
estación local publico
public local station

As if that were not enough, three more MUXs have appeared:

  • One has names like MPEG2 SD, MPEG4 SD, MPEG4 HD, and Test all showing the same images that vary from Canal+, which is normally “coded”, to Telecinco.
  • Another MUX with names of CAT1, CAT2, CAT3 and CAT4, which I assume will be broadcasting in Catalan.
  • Finally there’s Channel 1, Channel 2, Channel 3 and Channel 4, which have been showing content that varies. Sometimes tarot reading or astrology or yet another music video station with personals.

So I now receive well over 50 TDT stations and it looks like more is to come with the new MUXs. >/p>
