I have often passed by Forn Mistral (Mistral Bakery) situated in the center of Barcelona near Plaça Universitat. It's a few steps away from La Cava de Los Faros, a liquor store noted for their diverse selection of absenta.

In the window they have loaves of various types of breads and there is always a hoard of people waiting their turn. I have been piqued by their pan medieval or medieval bread. A placard explains that it is made using a very old recipe and represents the type of bread eaten a millenium ago.

So today I bought a loaf and here it is:

Interesting that it has a very tough crust and non-uniform texture. It tastes like what people in San Francisco would call “French bread”, a bit tangy, but not sour-dough.

The bread pictures were taken on my kitchen counter.

Actually the speciality of that shop (but go to the one in Av. Mistral, near Av Paral·lel) are the ensaïmades... They're absolutely great and after trying them you will hate any others.

Wasn't that a simple "pà de pagès"?

Yes, I have seen the ensaïmades too, and they look great. Also they still had publicidades for coques para san Juan.

Ah, didn't you try them? They're only for Sant Joan, they don't serve them anymore throughout the year!

Coques por Sant Juan

I had a friend bring over a couple of coques (o cocas en castellano) to indulge for Friday night and Saturday (burp!) I can't try everything the first year that I am here! I´ll remember Mistral for next year though.

Re: Coques por Sant Juan

You can eat ensaimades all year long, whereas coques are just seasonal
