The Catalunya Parliament election results are in. Here are the highlights:

  • CiU obtains the victory

  • The tri-party (PSC, ERC and ICV) retains the majority

  • Pacts — PSC, ERC and ICV could return to govern, but pacts of CiU-ERC and CiU-PSC are also possible

  • Abstencion — All of the parties lament the fall of voter participation in relation to 2003

  • History — Montilla (PSC) could become the first ‘president’ of the Generalitat not born in Catalunya

  • Ciutadans — The entrance of a new party in Parliament will necesitate changes

  • CiU, ICV and the new Ciutadans gained seats

  • PSC, ERC and PP lost seats

  • PSC, ERC, ICV and Ciutadans are left-leaning

  • CiU and PP are right-leaning

  • CiU, ERC, and ICV are “nationalist” (separatist)
