About this time last year I posted about TDT (terrestrial digital technology) here in Barcelona. Back then there were 18 channels available. This year there are 33 (four duplicates or 29 unique channels). This compares to the 20 digital stations available in the SF Bay Area where I lived before moving here.

Among the changes:
  • “VEO 2” became “SET” or Sony Entertainment Television which broadcasts mainly shows from the US (in English and castellano).
  • The two “La Sexta” are now full-time.
  • There has been an addition of Grupo Godó stations (TD8) plus three more in tests.
  • There are now a dozen digital radio stations also broadcasted.
  • TV3 also transmits AC3 as one of its audio programs.
  • Three music stations: 40 Latino, Fly Music, and Telehit (from México).
  • Three all news stations: 24H TVE, CNN+, and 3/24.

Europe just seems to understand how to make a great DTT setup - that's something that they're struggling with here - by giving the licences free to the established players, the government here hobbled new entries into the DTT market. No content means no one has digital TVs or set top boxes - and that means no content.....
