Now that 2007 has started, I have had the opportunity to compare the climate data for 2005 and 2006. Overall 2006 was hotter and drier than the 2005. For most of Spain this is now the third year of drought and is the worst situation since measurements have been taken.

The following table compares temperature and participation data here in El Masnou for the past two years. Temperatures are in degrees Celsius (C) and precipitation in millimeters (mm). The final data row displays the absolute maximum and maximum temperatures and the total precipitation for the year.

Some interesting things to note are:

  • The highest temperature reached for both years was 30.3ºC (86.5ºF). So “heat waves” here aren’t that much above the typical maximum.
  • The lowest temperature reached in 2005 was -1.6ºC (29.1ºF), but for 2006 it was 3.0ºC (37.4ºF). That’s quite a bit warmer.
  • The mean temperature of the year for 2005, 16.3ºC (61.3ºF) rose to 17.7ºC (63.9ºF) in 2006. That’s a significant increase.
  • Only January and June in 2005 were warmer than the corresponding months in 2006. The past few months have been particularly warmer than in 2005.
  • There was 45% less rainfall in 2006 compared to 2005. This really demonstrates drought conditions currently.

I’ll continue to monitor the climate here to see if 2006 was an “outlier” or part of a trend. The two warmest years on record for the world were 2005 and 1998. Last year was the hottest year on record for the US. Up to now January has been warmer than normal, but we are expecting are first cold wave shortly.
