Bon Nadal! Merry Christmas!
Part of a poster in the Renfe station at Plaça Catalunya.

I thought I better post some pictures before Christmas day was over. Last week they were busy putting up decorations in the Renfe Rodalies station at Plaça Catalunya. Previous years there had been a tree or two, but this year there were lights, posters, poinsettias and a number of decorated trees.

I don’t know if the additional decorations is because of the upcoming national elections in March, the recent problems with the AVE construction, or the pending transfer of the Renfe Rodalies to FGC, the Catalunya government railway system.

One of the big clocks was festooned with evergreens and lights. I don’t know if that’s what made it stop running.

If you look close, you will notice that the tree decorations are red and yellow, which happen to be the colors in both the Spanish and Catalan flags.

Christmas tree at Diagonal Mar

I went to the Diagonal Mar mall to do some more grocery shopping on my way home and ran into this huge Christmas tree that was at least 10 m tall. It was covered with blue lights in keeping with the Sea theme of the mall.

It looks (and sounds) like you are very much enjoying your Xmas season!!.... It seems to have a slightly more religious emphasis over there (which is understandable being in the large Catholic enclave of Spain!), rather than the focus on materialistic values over here! :-)

The large Catholic enclave of Spain

The only thing religious was the phrase "Bon Nadal", the rest of the poster was kind of a retro wintry thing with people dressed for cold weather and trains, naturally. The poster stretched for at least 5 meters. There were no religious figures to be seen in any of the decorations. The stores focus on materialistic values just like elsewhere and the shopping ends January 6th when the Three Kings arrive. The next day rebajas or sales start.

Here in Catalunya December 25, 26 and January 1, 6 are all holidays. And this is after two other days off earlier in December.

Re: The large Catholic enclave of Spain

Yep!

We get the 25th and 26th of December, as well as the 1st of January as Public Holidays too. But that's interesting that you also get the 6th of January off as a Public Holiday too!

I suppose the only difference is that here, the sales start the VERY next day after Xmas - it's sheer MADNESS! LOL

*hugs*
