My typical weekly routine includes “Bacon day” at BBB on Thursday evening. Last week after talking to two maduros from Germany, I noticed an apparent American who looked vaguely familiar. We started chatting and it came to me who it probably was. So I asked if he used to live in the Netherlands. He answered “Yes”, and then I said that I had met him in person some nearly 20 years ago in San Francisco. He vaguely remembered me as well. Joe Francis was in town for several days on business.

I first became acquainted with Joe from his humorous musings on soc.motss more than two decades ago when he used the moniker of “JoJo”. Motss is an acronym for Members of the Same Sex. Soc.motss is an Internet discussion group (also known historically as a Usenet newsgroup) for lesbian and gay people. The newsgroup has existed since October 7, 1983, back before the World Wide Web and Mosaic were created. We talked about a number of “old-timers” like Jess Anderson, Steve Dyer, Roger Klorese, and my dearly departed friend Rob Bernardo.

After BBB Joe cajoled me in accompanying him for dinner at Castro Restaurant located in the next block of Casanova. The “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon” is often reduced two zero or one degree in my case. What a pleasant surpise running into Joe after so many years!

Did you know the guy running it had a nervous breakdown over soc.motss?

Steve Dyer and Roger Klorese - I think I remember them from early web days too.

John Lindsay (my partner) was an early person on there, probly from 83 as he was at Imperial College then, although I'd have to ask him tonight when he was on.

Ditto another John D from the UK who I also know.

Steve Dyer and Roger Klorese

Steve Dyer has sort of disappeared, but Roger Klorese posts on LJ.
