Permiso de residencia

This morning I went to the Comisaría de Policía in Badalona to pick up my residency ID card. Fortunately there were no problems. After three years, I finally have this card which shows that I am a legal resident of Spain. I can use it as ID for things like my bank card in order to make purchases. (I have already put it to that use.)

Next I went to my bank in Barcelona to change my account from being “non-resident” to “resident”. That will reduce some of my bank charges. Fortunately the account number didn’t change, just the characteristics of the account.

On my way home I went to the Ajuntament (city hall) of El Masnou. They made a photocopy of my carné and gave me a new justificant de residència, which is proof that I have registered at my town. It now uses my NIE (Foreigner Identification Number) instead of my US passport number. The NIE is used like a Social Security number in the US for tax purposes, etc.

If you look close in the upper-left part of the card, you will see an image of a bull, one of the symbols of Spain. On the right-side of the card is the escudo or coat of arms of Spain. Some people have suggested that the flag of Spain should be changed so that it uses an image of a toro in place of the escudo. All I can say is bull

¡Gracias!

Thanks Franco. It took a lot of effort. What should have been easy was much more difficult than I could have imagined.

A big bull on the flag says to me "Welcome to the Kingdom of Osborne!"

Welcome to the Kingdom of Osborne!

There are 89 examples of the Osborne bull advertisements remaining in the Spanish countryside, but only one in Catalunya. Recently Barcelona's bull was vandalized by people who identified themselves as Catalan radicals, cutting off its legs. Later they were restored by neighbours.

I have a Kukusumuxu T-shirt that has the Catalan burro kicking the ass of the Osborne bull.

¡Gracias!

It appears that at this point I only have to fill out a form when I renew my temporal permit. After two renovaciones and five years from now, I can obtain permanente status. Next step is to get a health card for the public system. (I already have private health insurance.)

Thanks!

I used my new ID card today when I bought groceries using my debit card. In the past they wouldn't accept my CDL for ID, they wanted my passport. I normally only carry my passport when I need it for a specific purpose, like last Friday when I picked up my ID card.

You are supposed to carry ID on your person at all times in Spain. Since I have been here, I have never been asked to show ID (luckily.) Now that I am legal, maybe I will get asked.

I bought some train tickets on-line yesterday and supplied my NIE rather than passport number. Citizens have to supply their DNI. Interesting that they require this information. I have no way of knowing if there is some computer check on the information, but I doubt it.
