|Fifth anniversary of being retired

Last week marked the fifth anniversary that I was “RIF”ed from Sun Microsystems. At the age of 59 I didn’t think that I would have much success at finding a similar job. Besides, for a couple of years I sometimes felt on my commute home that “I need to retire”. And so I did! I’m going to post a brief history of the past five years, one post for each year.
I spent several months deciding where I wanted to retire. I knew it would be in Spain, but I didn’t know where. I settled on Barcelona. It took a while getting my house ready to sell. I also decided to spend the month of September in Barcelona to see if I could really live there. The first week of my trip I had received and accepted an offer to buy my house. The last week of the trip I visited the house that I ultimately bought.
Soon as I returned to California in early October, I attended my daughter’s wedding. I spent the rest of the year emptying my house of furniture and personal stuff that I had collected over the past 40-odd years. It was the end of December that I signed the “closing papers” of my house in Richmond and I flew to Barcelona to start a new life.
It turned out that this was a bit premature.
The house actually "closed" about a month after this picture was taken.
