New recycle center [ Wednesday, 07 Apr 10 | 12:50 ]
[My Location |El Masnou (Barcelona) España]
[My Mood |happyhappy]

As you probably know, we have community-based recycle/trash collection centers rather than individual containers for each home/building. Back in California each city where I lived had a contract with a specific private company that did recycle/refuse collections. In Spain the city does this function. You pay the ajuntament (town council) directly from your bank account (EFT) rather than by check.

In the past we had plastic containers, which were labeled with what you are supposed to deposit. For several years I used a set of containers about 100 meters (yards) from my home. Then that area was converted to a drop off/pick up zone for students and I had to use a set of containers further away and up the hill.

As part of the recent “Stimulus Plan”, a new set of collection containers were installed, located a bit closer to where I live than the original set that I used. These new containers are actually installed in underground vaults. Above ground there are “pipes” with covers where material is deposited. This new method of collection is less smelly and less of a visual blight than before.

The various types of collection are:

  • organic fraction (garbage), which is used to produce soil and fertilizer,
  • paper and cardboard,
  • glass, plus a separate entrance for batteries,
  • packaging, think: plastic, cans, and “bricks”,
  • common refuse (trash).

I wish this was typical in the US.

Very nice! I can't imagine not recycling. They pick up recyclables at the curb every two weeks here.

They pick up recyclables at the curb every two weeks

For larger items, you can call and they will pick up larger items with a truck. El Masnou and the two adjoining cities operate a site for recycling appliances and "dangerous" products.

There is also a truck that comes by around midnight (including Sunday) that picks up stuff that people leave on the curb as well as the sidewalk trash containers. Of course not everyone here is as conscientious about recycling as I am.
