|Día de Sant Jordi
||[ Saturday, 23 Apr 05 | 21:22 ]
Today is St. George’s Day, the patron saint for this area. And yes, this is the same St. George that killed a dragon fame. On the way into town I saw many balconies festooned with Catalan flags and banners.
The custom here is to give the special people in your life either a rose or a book. On the streets in Barcelona there were a number of tables set up selling roses. And El Corte Inglés department store at Plaça Catalunya had a sidewalk special of a 10% discount on books that included a free gift of a rose.
As for me, I came up empty-handed. In previous years I have received email from people I knew in Barcelona that included a picture of a rose and a book along with a greeting. When I did my shopping today, I said Bon día de Sant Jordi! to the shopkeepers. And always received the same in return.
