Celebrating Ruben’s Birthday
Ruben and Me
Celebrating Ruben's birthday at Flamant restaurant.
Last Saturday night we went to Barcelona to celebrate Ruben's birthday with several of his closest friends. As usual, there were many changes of plans and attendees. Things weren’t settled until Thursday night and Ruben had to message all the participants with the details.
We decided to meet in front of Fnac and Habitat in Plaça Catalunya at 19:00 (7 pm). Once we had assembled, we started looking for place to have a before dinner drink.
We ended up a short distance away at Bar Obama on Gran Via near the corner of Rambla Catalunya. It’s supposed to be a British African pub, I thought it was more of a soccer sports bar, despite being filled with memorabilia from “British Africa”. I guess they are “cashing in” on the surname of Barack. I had a glass of Guiness stout.
We ate an early dinner at Flamant Restaurant which is located a few blocks away from the Bar Obama. They feature Mediterranean cuisine, which means dishes other than tapas. Ruben originally had a reservation at 23:45, which was a bit late and he switched it to 21:00 which is when the restaurant opened for dinner.
Two hours later we had finished dinner and, since it was still early, decided to have a drink at the Bel-Luna Jazz Club on Rambla Catalunya close to Plaça Catalunya. I was a little surprised to find a jazz club in Barcelona, but jazz is actually quite popular in Spain and their are a number of annual jazz festivals.
We finally left about 01:00 and took the NitBus from Plaça Catalunya back to my place. The bus stop is across the street from where I live.
A cultural note: here in Spain the person having the birthday pays for the partying unlike in the US.
